Athena

Athena is one of the principal goddesses of Greek mythology and is associated with wisdom, strategic warfare, crafts, civic order and the protection of cities. She became especially important as the patron goddess of Athens.

Birth of Athena

Athena’s birth is one of the most distinctive divine birth myths in Greek tradition. According to Hesiod and later sources, Zeus swallowed Metis after learning of a prophecy concerning her children.

Later Zeus suffered a terrible pain in his head, and Athena emerged fully armed from his skull. Different traditions name different gods as the one who opened Zeus’s head.

Goddess of Wisdom

Athena represents intelligence, planning, practical skill and disciplined judgment. Her wisdom is frequently contrasted with impulsive or uncontrolled behavior.

Strategic Warfare

Athena is a war goddess, but her military character differs from that of Ares. She is especially associated with strategy, defense, tactics, discipline and organized warfare.

Patron of Athens

The city of Athens regarded Athena as its principal divine protector. According to the famous contest myth, Athena and Poseidon competed for patronage of the city.

Athena’s gift, traditionally identified as the olive tree, was chosen and she became the city’s patron goddess.

Heroes

Athena frequently assists heroes. She supports figures such as Odysseus, Perseus, Heracles and other legendary characters whose success depends on intelligence as much as strength.

Crafts and Weaving

Athena was associated with skilled craftsmanship, weaving and technical knowledge. The myth of Arachne later became one of the most famous narratives connected with this aspect of the goddess.

Athena Parthenos

Athena was widely understood as a virgin goddess. Her title Parthenos became especially famous through the Parthenon and the monumental cult statue created by Phidias.

Worship

Athena was worshipped throughout the Greek world, but Athens became the greatest center of her cult. The Panathenaic festival was among the most important religious celebrations in the city.
